Finance Talk With Your Kids + The Benefits

Updated: May 27, 2019

Today I came across a social media question that asked, "Do you share your financial position with your kids?"

I thought it was a pretty interesting question being that my interest is in PARENTING.

To personally answer it: We don't hide anything from our kids, not our financial status, not arguments, not disagreements, yes they can be different. Basically, we are an open book with them.

Not only do we not hide our finances from them they actually contribute to our income because we are a one income family. This means we pool all of our money together to accomplish whatever God calls us to do.

All of my teens have jobs and they all contribute. It's so heart warming because they don't expect any of the money. They always just tell us to take what we need.

For four months last year we hit a financial rock bottom and it was literally all hands on deck to make ends meet, but we didn't let that stop us from building our home. Y'all who have been following us for a while know that we are building our legacy home on FAITH. Yes, faith! It's a huge home and the Father has provided ALL of it and most of it seriously by pure MIRACLES!

Our construction crew has mainly been our family, but one week last year we had a family fly in to help and we had a work party for a week and that was glorious!

So, back to the finance question. We have never gave our kids an allowance instead our kids have always given us money.

When they were younger around 6-12 they worked at farmer's market as entrepreneurs. They did really well and they contributed 50% of all earnings to the family fund because they eat here too!

Doing that with my kids has produced some really beautiful fruit.

Because we have taught them NOT to be takers, but givers they are so generous. Entitlement is not allowed in our home. Everyone carries their fare share of the load.

The scripture says, if a man doesn't work he doesn't eat. So, we start them young on that one.

My kids knew every time we were down to our last dollar because I would remind them, "when we are down to nothing God is up to something!"

This gave them the opportunity to see God show up and show out!

I wouldn't trade our hard times for nothing! I know we are going places and this all soon will be a far memory. I am already thinking about how I am going to balance things our for my younger kids who will not remember the struggle...

Bottom Line: Not only should you raise your children to be aware your financial situation, but you can include them in the process too which will bear good fruit!

Anyhow, back to the question, "do you share your financial position with your kids?" I am interested to hear your perspective.
